I love high-concept stories grounded by human emotions, and luckily, this idea led to something incredibly universal — Responsibility. Even if you haven’t dealt with a heartbreaking condition or can’t bench 4 station wagons, we’ve all struggled to accept our responsibilities at one point or another. If everything went to plan, Holding Out is a fun, interesting, and emotional story about two people who have lived in that avoidance for far too long. I was lucky to work alongside so many superbly talented artists to bring this to life. A couple witnesses a paranormal event that separates them into two distinct dimensions. “Bisected” by Danny Piñeros 📶 Connect with the Filmmakers: https://dannypineros.com/ 🎬 Director’s Statement: Transitioning from music videos to narrative filmmaking, I’ve always been driven by the desire to craft stories that captivate from the outset. With this project, my focus shifted towards a high-concept narrative, where the central idea takes precedence over individual characters. It was a challenge I set for myself: to produce an engaging narrative from start to finish. My long-standing fascination with the paranormal, particularly when juxtaposed with scientific explanations, served as the foundation for this film. I’ve often pondered questions like, ‘How do objects move seemingly of their own accord?’ Could there be another dimension coexisting with ours, occasionally intersecting and producing what we perceive as ‘ghostly’ phenomena? This line of thought led to the inception of ‘Bisected.’ From the outset, I was deeply passionate about this concept. I’ve always yearned to delve into the sci-fi genre, but in a manner that didn’t rely on extravagant budgets or heavy VFX. The practical effects we employed, such as the door, the radio, and the woman’s disappearance, are testament to this approach. In terms of mood and tone, I drew significant inspiration from Denis Villeneuve’s work. ‘Sicario,’ with its tension, tone, and camera movements, became a reference point for our film. My aim was to craft a grounded sci-fi piece with the emotional depth of a drama. I believe this story has potential beyond its current format. It’s not just about the interdimensional concept but also the complexities of a relationship under strain. The narrative hints at a couple grappling with past issues, now thrust into an extraordinary situation. So with “Would You Like To Try Again,” we wanted to merge the two and make a sci-fi movie that funnels that feeling of ruminating over your old regrets through the repetitive nature of old arcade games. It’s a small cryptic film that feels incredibly with our near silent protagonist as she gains hindsight by seeing a new perspective she didn’t before. A Mind Cannot Touch is a sci-fi drama about a mother, LEDA, who uses her expertise in neuroscience to bring her deceased daughter, AIRLIA, back from the grave as a sentient hologram—complete with Airlia’s memories and consciousness via mind uploading. Not wanting her daughter to know that she died, Leda decides to lie to Airlia and say she merely recovered from a long-term illness… but how long can she keep up this charade when her daughter will never again be able to grow, taste and touch? And what happens when Airlia discovers the truth? Will she even want that kind of life? 🎬 Director’s Statement: A Mind Cannot Touch is a deeply personal look at loss and the lengths someone will go to avoid it. Inspired by my own mother’s loss of her first child, I wanted to present a story with plenty of room for interpretation and exploration of the viewer’s feelings. While most of us may initially recoil at the concept, I think with deeper reflection the prospect of bringing a dead loved one back to life, in any form, is something too irresistible to ignore. But as all too often in life, we put our own needs above anyone else’s, which can have catastrophic consequences for those around us and ourselves. I love grounded sci-fi that pulls at our heartstrings and leaves us with no easy answers.
